Why Serra de Tramuntana is a World Heritage Site

Discover the magic of Tramuntana.

“Serra de Tramuntana” mountains are one of the jewels of the island of Mallorca. Many tourists who come to Mallorca choose the island only because of its beaches and a good weather, they do not even know Tramuntana exists. From HSM we want to claim the beauty of Serra de Tramuntana, named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, thanks to its natural landscapes and beauty.

1. Natural landscapes
Serra de Tramuntana is appreciated for its unique landscapes. It is not strange to see the local peaple on excursion to enjoy the best natural panoramic views of Mallorca. Its nature and vegetation is the main tourist attraction.

2. Historical culture
Serra de Tramuntana has an enormous cultural heritage, and its landscapes have inspired many artists in creation of their works. King Jaume I, the writer Ramon Llulll, the Archduke Luis Salvador or the couple formed by the musician Frédéric Chopin and the writer George Sand are some artists who have lived in Serra de Tramuntana.

3. Landscapes shaped by the humans
In Serra de Tramuntana you will not only find natural landscapes, but also creations made by humans that strengthen its great heritage. Paths, possessions, defense towers, and most of all the Sanctuary of Lluc, a place of pilgrimage and cultural symbol of Mallorca.

4. Flora and fauna
Serra de Tramuntana has an extense variety of vegetation and autochthonous animals, which are only found in Serra. The so called “ferreret”, a kind of small toad, is one of the most recognized animals. Among the landscapes protected by their ecological value we find the Sa Dragonera Natural Park, the Torrent de Pareis and the Fonts Ufanes, a small stream that runs through the forest.
